Ed #16: Digital Printing Possibilities

One day not so long ago, we received a phone call out of the blue from NewPage Corporation. We didn’t know too much about NewPage, but we quickly learned that they are the largest producer of printing and specialty papers in North America. Why were they interested in us? Well it turns out they were working on a new edition of the design magazine they publish, Ed, and it is focusing on advantages of digital printing. Needless to say, we were intrigued.

NewPage wanted to spotlight the possibilities that digital printing brings to designers. Ed #16: Digital Possibilities, is all about the printing and design capabilities that are opened up with digital printing. From small runs, to colors on black paper, to precise color matching, digital printing opens up a lot of doors for printed work. One of these possibilities is small run, high quality packaging printing. When they were looking for a project that spotlights digital printing’s abilities in packaging, they came across our portfolio, and were particularly impressed by Luna Kombucha, one of our clients.

Luna Kombucha Feature

Luna Kombucha uses vibrant metallic labels on their kombucha bottles. This allows them to stand out on store shelves, and give every different variety of tea it’s own unique personality. This project showcases digital printing’s ability to produce extremely high quality work for small quantities. Since there is no need for plates to be made, Luna is free to add new products whenever they want, allowing them to innovate and create new flavors as fast as the market can handle them.

For us, it was really amazing to be a part of Ed #16. The magazine as a whole tells the story of how far digital printing has come since it’s humble beginnings, and we were honored to help tell it. Digital printing is the future, and we are fully invested in getting there as soon as possible. If you’re a designer looking for more information on digital printing, or you’re just interested in the subject, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Ed #16: Digital Possibilities (it’s free, there are a lot of other great issues as well). We are very proud to be a part of such an important project.
