If you’re able to sit down with Phil, consider yourself lucky. He’s a busy guy, and he wears many hats. Having been with Blue Label for over four years, Phil’s official title is Systems Manager, but he’s also (unofficially) known as our Jack of All Trades and Fixer of All Problems. What do all of these titles mean? Let’s hear it from the man himself.
“Basically, I do whatever it takes to make sure everything’s running smoothly.”
Sounds good to us.
But “making sure everything runs smoothly” is not as simple as it may seem. Phil “nerds out” (his words, not ours) by making sure each of the software programs we rely so heavily on are always running correctly. “I could be fixing problems on someone’s computer one minute, a weird bug in the software the next, and then improving the digital front end of the servers that communicate with the presses.”
Sounds exhausting. But guess what…he loves it!
The Coolest Part of Phil’s Job?
Granting wishes (left and right!) by turning his customers’ “desires and ideas into a reality,” (i.e., making dreams come true). When a customer comes to Blue Label with specific artwork for a label design, Phil does his due diligence to ensure the request is a feasible one. For instance, if a customer submits a design that involves extra decoration, like foil stamping or embossing, that doesn’t comply with the laws of physics, for reasons such as size or margin, Phil will find a way to please the presses and the people. “It’s a highly satisfying challenge to make it work without sacrificing the intent,” he says. “There’s an educational piece with it and most customers don’t know the trade secrets.” Phil has years of experience that allow him to instinctively identify what will work and what probably won’t. “But there’s also the production piece”, Phil explains. “How are we going to take this artwork and make it into a label? And the application. How are we going to make the label stick to the product?”

The Digital Label Printing Family
All this problem solving? He doesn’t do it alone. Phil is pretty tight with the entire Blue Label team.
“I truly enjoy the people I work with everyday. We have a good time. We like to joke and have good conversations, but what we enjoy most is solving label and artwork problems.”
And, perhaps surprisingly (for this lover of challenges), his favorite days are when nothing goes wrong. “When everything goes well, when there aren’t problems, it’s satisfying to see everything working the way its supposed to work.”
We totally agree. That’s why Phil and the rest of the team work tirelessly to make sure “smooth” is exactly the way you’d describe your Blue Label experience. (But feel free to add other words like “easy” and “fun” and “nobody does it better”.) But don’t take our word for it. See for yourself! Call us at 1-866-506-2583 or shoot us an email. We’re happy to send you a sample pack, or even meet you for a beer. (Don’t worry, we’ll definitely bring Phil.)
