You’ve got to design a good product, figure out how to consistently produce it, distribute it, market it, and scale it. All of these are sizable considerations that take a lot of your time and money to figure out. And somewhere in there, you’ve got to figure out the packaging for your product, how the product will get into the packaging (co-packer, filling equipment, hand labor, etc.). And, within that, you’ve got to decide on a label for your packaging.
What I’m getting at here is that deciding on custom labeling can seem like a far off, small decision in the grand scheme of getting your product to market. And you know what? You’re right. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying digital labels aren’t important. Just like picking a container that doesn’t break, choosing ingredients that are safe, and figuring out production that’s reliable, a good label is paramount to the success of your product. It’s just that, of all the decisions you have to make, deciding on the design, material, and size of your label isn’t exactly a priority.
And that’s totally the right response. The only time labels can become a problem, when they can potentially delay a deadline or cause a missed delivery, is when things get pushed to the last minute. Printing the actual labels doesn’t take much time at all, usually three to five business days, designing custom labeling is what takes a longer time. Not because there is a lot of waiting in the process, but because there are a lot of decisions to make. From material, to color, to finishing technique (foil stamping, embossing, spot varnishing, etc.) to how the labels should arrive in your facility (sheets, rolls, how large the rolls should be).
Now, these decisions don’t have to be made for every order, or even for every new SKU you introduce, but there is some setup in building a workflow with your label producer. They need the correct materials in stock, the appropriate dies on hand, and artwork files that are print quality. All of these take time to track down or build. How can you make sure all of this is going to go smoothly, and you’ll have your custom printed labels in time? Easy, start early. Even before you know the final quantities you’ll need, and perhaps even before you’ve produced your product, you can start the conversation about digital labels.
Give your custom label printer a call to talk about what materials they have, and what they have to order. You can also send over art files for them to look at and repair.
