What You Need to Consider When Investing in Keg Collars

A good keg collar can play several roles for your brewery. Not only is it a great way to share information, it also serves as a key compliance tool and a way to help sell more of your products. Of course, a poorly-made keg collar isn’t going to do your business any good. It’s important that you check off all the following criteria when you’re ready to order custom keg collars.

Include Important Information

As with any label for an alcoholic product, keg collars must include certain information required by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Breweries have a responsibility to obtain label approval from the TTB, so adherence to federal labeling requirements is a must. These requirements include:

  • Brewery and brewery address – This includes the brewer’s name or trade name and the place the beer is produced
  • Class of beer – The specific beer class must be included, while the individual type may also be included
  • Net contents – Must be shown unless the net contents are clearly branded or otherwise permanently marked into the container
  • Alcoholic content (ABV) – The percentage of quantity may be stated unless prohibited by individual states laws
  • Health warning statement – Must include the following statements in the required type sizes
    • “(1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects.”
    • “(2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.”

While it’s not necessarily required by the TTB, a production date or batch code is also useful information to include on your label. The addition of a clear date (day, month, and year) or internal code will help you keep track of when a keg was packaged. In turn, this can help you properly rotate and use your kegs in a timely matter.

You may also want to include a keg pressure warning on your collar as well. This will help warn people from over-pressurizing the container and direct them to consult their local distributor or retailer for tapping guidance.

It’s All About Marketing

Keg collars can do more than just provide information to you and your end users. These labels are another way for you to make your products stand out and make potential customers take notice. While you can find basic, black-and-white keg collar templates, you should try to make sure your labeling truly represents your brand.

There are multiple ways that you can turn a normal collar into an intriguing marketing tool. Full-color keg collars can make your branding pop against the metallic surface and make sure people continue to take note of your business. Also, keg collars don’t always need to be round. A printing company may be able to create some custom-shaped collars that still fit on the top of a keg. If you want to stick with a black-and-white color scheme, a quality collar material and can still separate your labeling from run-of-the-mill paper templates. In addition to keg collars, keg wraps give you another way to set your kegs apart from your competitors and tie your branding together.
